Every year, HSTAT recieves over 300 new students. However, we also recieve new batches of teachers. Let’s meet them.
Ms. Whang (11th grade English)
Ms. Whang previously taught in Los Angeles for six years, but having moved from West to East, this is her first teaching gig in New York. “The transition has been great, the staff here are very friendly and supportive. I love my classes and students, it’s been a good start.”
When asked about what she does outside of the classroom, she responded, “Aside from being present to what I’m doing as an educator, I love a lot of things. My daily passions are having time to rest, eating breakfast, sunlight and reading. I love writing, and making art. I’m very chill so I enjoy anything that I’m doing, but if I were to seek out something it would be something hands on.”
Ms. Eydeland (10th grade English)
Ms. Eydeland recently joined the DOE after working at the Urban Assembly School for Creative Careers. Before that, she gained experience as a writing tutor at Hunter College, a homeschool teacher and through outdoor education at a farm upstate.
“It’s been good, I’m still learning a lot about the community, but I think what excites me the most about it is that there are a lot more clubs, teens and sports for a lot of students to get involved in. It seems like there are a lot of skills, creativity and people are putting the effort into making it happen.”
She spends her time on the second floor co-teaching with Ms. Brown.
Mr. Medrano (10th grade Math)
Mr. Medrano is an HSTAT Alum, and he says coming back here after almost 20 years away was surreal at first, but he has adjusted seamlessly. During his free time he likes to play basketball, even though recently he has been too busy to play. Mr. Medrano likes the maturity of the students and teachers and loves the HSTAT community.
Ms. Caballero (9th grade English)
Ms. Caballero spent five years teaching Middle School before coming over to HSTAT. The biggest shift for her has been the maturity of the students here compared to the maturity of the middle schoolers.
Ms. Nelson (10th grade Math Teacher)
Ms. Nelson used to be a chef for a private restaurant in Manhattan. She connects her experience in cooking to math in which measurements for recipes involve mathematics.
HSTAT is the first school she’s taught at and the only one she wants to work in. Ms. Nelson said that she felt welcomed here and loves the community. She believes everyone is supportive and is always looking forward to teaching everyday.
Mr. Sisane (Physical Education Teacher)
Mr. Sisane spent seven years teaching Physical Education at Andries Hudde Middle School. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, and he attended Madison High School. On the side he likes playing basketball and now loves coaching additionally. He also likes to play lacrosse, football and baseball. He likes HSTAT because of the environment and the students.
Mr. Ramey (Physics Teacher)
This is Mr. Ramey’s first year teaching in NYC, as he was a part of the Teaching Fellows program. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Ramey played rugby in high school before going to the University of Maryland where he graduated in 2020.
Mr. Wicki (9th grade Science)
Mr. Wicki is new to teaching, picking up on the career after being an experienced Online Editor, working in the media production industry.
Now co teaching 9th grade biology, Wicki has enjoyed his new career so far, after being able to find his footing. On the weekends he likes to go to Prospect park to play soccer, ride his bike, and take photos.
Mr. Schutte (9th grade Math)
Mr. Schutte was a middle school teacher before teaching here at HSTAT. He has always enjoyed teaching Math. The middle school where he was working at unfortunately closed down, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing teaching.
Teaching in high school has always been a dream of his, and he describes HSTAT as very caring and full of opportunity.
Ms. Ouyang (Geometry Teacher)
Ms. Ouyang is a brand new teacher, spending time before teaching as a tutor at her college. “I attended college in upstate New York, SUNY Geneseo. It’s a very beautiful college, it holds around 4,000 students so it’s a small college. It’s right underneath Rochester, and the sunsets are so beautiful.”
Although Ouyang is new to teaching, she always had a feeling that this was for her. “I started thinking about being a teacher ever since I was a little kid. Ever since I was little I liked being able to teach friends younger than me, so that is where my teacher role started.”
Ms. Ma Liu
Ms. Ma Liu is the newest member of our Spanish teacher team. Ma Liu came to this country as an immigrant, and she wants to support students. She has adjusted fast to HSTAT, crediting the friendly environment. She feels as though she’s in good hands as students are very respectful, and she receives a lot of support from other teachers.
