On September 30th and October 1st, more than 100 seniors participated in the annual two day senior mentor training program. The senior mentor program aims to integrate freshman in the school culture, providing them with senior guidance.
Lead by Senior Advisor Ms. Plumb and Mr. Sosa, who is the Readiness, Mentoring, & Peer Mediation advisor, Mentors look to plan activities for the newcomers to have a fun start of the year. The seniors worked together productively to create posters for the freshman to know where to go on field day.
Mr. Sosa & Ms. Plumb helped assist and train the seniors to collaborate together to brainstorm fun activities such as capture the flag, bean bag games, crack the code, and freeze tag.
They were also taught how to lead restorative circles for the Freshman, a strategy this school implements across the board that looks to build and restore relationships through an equal opportunity listening and sharing model.
When asked, Ms. Plumb said one of the biggest goals was “to make sure that the seniors were prepared and able to speak confidently and clearly.” She also wanted to teach them how to build trust within each other. The seniors wanted the freshman to use teamwork and helped them to be more confident.
“I had a really good time learning the different games myself and planning lessons that we would then give to the freshman” said Senior Mentor Lleyton Curtis.
Senior will visit Young Adult Health & Literature classes once a month to guide circles centered around getting integrated in school culture, developing healthy school habits and planning for the future.
