In the center of this city, the big apple, there’s a university that bears its name. Amongst the most competetive and selective in this country, the prestigious New York University is on the list of almost every high-acheiving college applicant. This includes our very own HSTAT senior class. Many HSTAT seniors applied to the Univerity and the outcome was unexpected.
The class of 2024 has set a record for admissions at the New York University. Thirty students in HSTAT’s class of 2024 have been selected thus far in this selective admissions process. In addition to this, four applicants were even accepted to NYU’s Shanghai campus, with an extensive study abroad program.
Early admission applicant Yi Li was admitted in December to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. When asked about the influx of Tele students, he responded with, “We didn’t apply knowing we’d get accepted, and we definitely didn’t know we would set a school record. No one expected us to reach such a great destination. But we worked hard these four years. With courage and passion, the destination is easier to get to. Passion shows our potential in life and courage is using our passion to face challenges. I’m glad to see it paid off for so many of us.”
A possible cause for this influx could be the newly introduced NYU Promise Scholarship, as it encouraged the senior class to apply ambitiously. The NYU promise is a guarantee from the selective university that lower income students whose families held normal assets would have their tuition completely covered.
This year saw the Early decision Applicant pool in NYU’s history. According to NYU’s Website, “The effort ensures that NYU meets admittees’ demonstrated financial need, provides yearly increases to keep up with increases in tuition, and—beginning with next year’s entering first-year class—eliminates tuition for those whose families earn less than $100,000.” This announcement has shown a 23% increase in students eligible for full-tuition scholarships, and a 10% increase in the number of admitted students who are first generation college students.
Many of the students admitted applied through early decision, meaning they met early deadlines for their applications and financial documentation. With the support of the college office and with programs such as Bottom line offering advising and assistance, this cohort, described as “daring and ambitious” saw unprecedented success.
The class of 2024 is the last remaining class to have went to high school over zoom, as their whole freshman year was conducted almost completely remote.
“The HSTAT College Office is thrilled for the future of Cohort 2024. This soon-to-be graduated class has demonstrated stellar work ethic, commitment to post-secondary education, and are trail blazers leaving an amazing legacy behind. This year especially, we have broken an extraordinary record: 30 Seniors have been admitted to NYU, most of them attending tuition-free thanks to The NYU Promise!”
The college office went on to say, “It really does take a village to achieve our goals and the Class of 2024 is a model example of this. Congratulations to all!”
This is a positive development and shows the potential students at this school have to flourish.
