Student. Captain of the Girls Basketball team. Softball Player. HSTAT Junior Lalyn Siew has a lot on her plate, and now she’s looking to pave the way into a different field.
Lalyn’s idea of starting her own fashion brand sparked during quarantine. She mentioned that designing started off as her just “messing around” and drawing designs for fun. Her love for designing came to life and she has slowly become a young entrepreneur.
Lalyn’s brand name started off as just “Loss,” but it has now been rebranded to “Urloss” , inspired by Drake and 21 Savage’s 2022 album “Your Loss”. Her ideas came to life, and soon enough she started making t-shirts and selling them to her close family members. After a while, she stopped.
This past summer Lalyn picked up her iPad and started to rekindle her previous ideas she had during quarantine.
She expanded her merchandise and designed sweat suits, shorts, and beanies in multiple colors.
Lalyn is currently receiving multiple orders, mostly from students in HSTAT. Students are in awe of her merchandise and say that they can’t wait for her to merchandise to drop.
Most of the time Lalyn is making her clothing at home, and although this process may not be sustainable, there is something fulfilling for her about being so hands on in the process. With the help of her father, she hopes to find a manufacturer in China, but she still plans to keep some of the operation local.
Working on “Urloss” hasn’t been easy for Lalyn, who finds herself stretched between many activities.
Lalyn is in the midst of a long Varsity Girl’s basketball season, one where she sometimes has games twice a week. She is currently ranked 63rd in the whole city in points scored, pacing the girl’s team at a little over 17 points per game. After her basketball season, she will transition right onto the girl’s softball season.
It’s hard to balance work, life and school. Getting home late from games cuts into her time to both be a student and manage her brand. As the orders come in, she now delegates most of her work on her brand to the weekends.
What was once just a fun hobby has now become a new business opportunity that is slowly but surely developing by the day and can potentially become something big.
